CANTILEVERS
|
| It
is
very
difficult
to
give
really
useful
advice
on
the
construction
of
cantilevers
because
the
circumstances
vary
so
widely.
The general principles are shown here. A tower is partly assembled in the normal way then continued by erecting the cantilever section from just the inner two vertical tower columns, with the two new columns resting on the roof. The cantilever can be made from frames which are the same dimensions as the main tower or smaller or larger, depending on the depth of cantilever required. Obviously great CARE must be taken to ensure the structure remains safe & stable. Adding stabilisers to the main tower or tying-in to the building are normally essential safety precautions. The use of Adjustable Bases either under the main tower or cantilever or both is usually helpful in ensuring the cantilever section rests firmly on the building. Some form of padding is normally required on the roof as shown in Detail”A”. |

| We certainly do not recommend using a cantilevered tower as here, but the photo is included because it shows clearly how a 4' x 4' tower can be cantilevered onto a roof. The first cantilever onto the lower roof is fine. Normally the full platform level would be positioned here for access to the upper windows or gutter. Our safety objection with this photo is the idea of walking up the upper roof thinking the scaffold gives adequate protection - in the way it has been constructed here it does not! |
